Säntis is one of those mountains that looks impressive from everywhere in eastern Switzerland, but it feels completely different once you are on the ridge yourself.

I have climbed it 3 times using different approaches, including routes from Ebenalp and Seealpsee. Each ascent feels like a new mountain. The perspective changes constantly and the terrain becomes more dramatic the higher you go. What looks like a single summit from the valley turns into a proper alpine route once you are on the way.

The ridge sections are the part I remember most. Narrow paths, steep drops on both sides, and long views across the Alpstein make this hike feel bigger than its altitude suggests. It is not technically difficult, but it is definitely not for the fainthearted.

One thing that makes Säntis special is that the route never feels remote in a harsh way. There are mountain restaurants along the way, places to stop, regroup, and continue. It turns a serious alpine day into something that is still accessible as a long hike from Zurich.

No matter which route you choose, reaching the summit always feels earned. And the view from the top stretches across lakes, ridges, and deep into the Alps. It is easily one of the most impressive day hikes in Switzerland.
